Supreme Master Television is widely available across the whole world. Please contact your local distributor listed below for your area:

ALL EUROPE:

Supreme Master Television is a digital channel available free-to-air from the
Eutelsat Hotbird 6 satellite at 13° East , Eurobird 1 satellite at 28.5° East and Astra 1 satellite at 19.2° and Sky Channel 835 in UK & Ireland

To receive the signal from the satellite you will need an appropriate DVB compliant satellite receiver and a dish of an adequate size, usually 90cm, but please seek local advice.

Receiving Supreme Master Television on Hotbird 6, Eurobird 1 and Astra 1 satellites

A basic free-to-air digital set-top box which now start from just £59, or £105 as a complete set-top box with antenna system, is more than suitable for free-to-air reception. Higher priced receivers offered by ourselves do not differ in quality, but in features, such as pay-TV upgrade possibilities.

The advantage of satellite reception is simple, more choice and less cost. Cable and other digital providers actually charge you per month for these free-to-air services, ie just for relaying to your cable set-top box. Satellite also covers a broader range of spoken languages and typically offers better digital picture and sound quality.

Receiving Supreme Master Television on Sky satellite is easy:

1. The most common way is through a sky dealer where you will establish a contract with Sky. Sky will install a satellite dish on your house and provide you with a Sky receiver and make all the connections to your TV.

http://www.digital-tv.co.uk/sky-digital
http://www.selectdigitaltv.co.uk/sky

2. Sky may also be viewed without a contract, for free (all the Freeview channels), but still requires a satellite dish and sky receiver (which can be purchased second hand). However you will need to purchase a "freeSat" card at about £20 for 2 years service. Also some non-Sky receivers also can be used with the FreeSat card allowing you to shop for a better price receiver.

In order to receive Sky Digital (Astra 2A and 2B and Eurobird satellites at 28.2°E and 28.5°E), you'll need to aim your dish towards 28-and-a-bit°E. This is perhaps easiest with a sat-meter to help you locate satellites. Please refer to our instruction page for further details, and for more information online see the following websites:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/installing_sky_digital.htm

3. If you live in a group of flats or apartments block and don't have permission to install a satellite dish from your landlord, there is an easy way to install one sky dish for the whole apartment block!
If at least 4 apartments wish to receive Sky, only one Sky dish will be necessary for all the building to receive. In most cases a landlord will not mind having one small Sky dish if it can be shared by all residents. See the following website for further information:

World’s major rivers dropping due to climate change.

In evaluating stream flows between 1948 and 2004, researchers at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) found that the water flow in one third of the world
’s largest rivers had become significantly reduced. Many factors affected this, including dams and water diverted for agriculture and industry. The scientists said these findings were consistent with their previous studies that showed drying and increased drought over land areas worldwide. They also noted that the diminished river flows had larger ecological and climate implications, as these giant rivers provide valuable deposits of nutrients and minerals when they pour out into the world’s oceans. Their content and flow thus affects ocean circulation, which itself plays a key role in regulating the world’s climate.

We appreciate your comprehensive studies, National Center for Atmospheric Research scientists in helping us understand the perilous balance of our water supplies. Let us all turn toward sustainable solutions to conserve this precious resource and return our Earth to equilibrium and peace.

During the March 2009
“Juice Fast for Peace” videoconference in California, USA, Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke of this very dilemma, suggesting the solution that is sure to bring relief to both people and the planet.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
March 7, 2009
– Culver City, California, USA

Supreme Master Ching Hai: We have water shortage and all the reservoirs are dwindling at such an alarming rate. Meat industry should be cut. That will help the planet. That will help to reserve our water, to refuel our lakes and our rivers again. That is physically and scientifically speaking. I
’m not talking about the merit, the bad karmic contribution that we are doing to ourselves by harming others. If we forgo 1 pound of beef, we can save more water than we stop showering for half a year. So if we really want to save the water for the world, then we have to change to a vegetarian diet, animal-free diet. Animal industry must be out.

Wilkins Ice shelf disintegrating.

The European Space Agency (EPA) has announced that this vast shelf, which had separated from the Arctic Peninsula, is now beginning to break up itself. With a bridge connecting the Wilkins Ice Shelf to the Peninsula having already disintegrated on April 5, scientists are saying that these events represent the most severe polar ice casualty in two decades. David Vaughan from the British Antarctic Survey, said, "There is little doubt that these changes are the result of atmospheric warming on the Antarctic Peninsula, which has been the most rapid in the Southern Hemisphere."

European Space Agency and British Antarctic Survey scientists, we appreciate your careful observations alerting us of the Antarctic
’s plight. With Heaven’s grace, may this trend be halted through our swift steps together in greater consideration of all beings.

During an August 2008 videoconference in Vancouver, Canada, Supreme Master Ching Hai once again conveyed her concern for our planet as she called on the public to reverse the damaging effects of global warming by quickly switching to the plant-based diet.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
Vancouver Center, Canada
– August 24, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: The time of disappearing of the ice means also the spelling of trouble for our planet. Of course it would be better if we already saved the planet before the ice melted. But as it is, we can only do the best we can and trying to inform everybody to save themselves by being vegetarian. If the ice melts quicker, then, of course, we have shorter time to save the planet. But nevertheless because people are joining the vegetarian diet, then we still can manage to save the world. Not complete, and not as much as we wanted if we have more time, but still better than nothing.

Bolivian indigenous people at risk of extinction due to climate change.

The Uru Chipaya have survived throughout the years on the edges of a Bolivian salt desert because of water supplied by the Lauca River. Now, global warming-related drought has caused the river to dry up. Mr. Juan Condori of the Uru Chipaya said,
“The Chipaya could cease to exist within the next 50 years. The most important thing is water. If there is no water the Chipaya have no life.” Bolivian President Evo Morales has stated that his government will partner with indigenous peoples at this year’s upcoming climate change summit in Denmark to advocate more strongly for developed countries to limit their greenhouse gas emissions.

We pray for the protection of the Uru Chipaya and other indigenous peoples through these urgent times. Let us work together in adopting truly sustainable lifestyles to ensure the survival of all humankind.

In an international seminar on August 20, 2008, Supreme Master Ching Hai once again expressed her concern and explained how a global shift to a vegan diet could actually restore fresh water supplies and other natural resources to the Earth.

International Seminar
August 20, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Meat consumption is the one that takes away all things. Water, cereals, and the vegetable protein, up to 85 percent of it. So, it
’s taking away a lot of the world resources. And water, 70 percent of it. So even if we don’t shower, we don’t brush teeth, it amounts to nothing when they don’t stop eating meat. We’re going to damage this planet. The resources will be running out. It’s already running out.

Study of ancient coral reef shows catastrophic rise in sea levels.

According to a recent study by Dr Paul Blanchon, marine scientist from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, rapid ice melt of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets could lead to sea level rises of several meters, which would inundate international cities like London in the United Kingdom; New York, USA; Tokyo, Japan, and Calcutta, India. With research that focused on fossilized Gulf of Mexico coral reefs dating back 121,000 years, Dr. Blanchon found that warmer temperatures at the time led to the disintegration of the same ice sheets now concerning scientists, causing a rapid jump in sea level at that time. With today’s fast melting of ice in the Antarctic and Greenland, this study on ancient coral reefs warns of the current potential for a disastrous sea-level rise if climate change is not mitigated.

Our sincere thanks, Dr. Blanchon and colleagues for your study that confirms humanity’s precarious situation and the need for all of us to act now to save our planetary home.

In a December 2008 videoconference held in California, USA, Supreme Master Ching Hai called on all global citizens to adopt a more caring lifestyle that halts devastating consequences such as these, thus conserving our lives and the planet.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
California, USA – December 12, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: So many islands have sunk under water already. Many coastal cities’ land has been eroded. Two thousand more islands are sinking, and 18 islands–for what we have known, maybe more, but we don’t know—18 islands including small nation islands already gone, disappeared under water, sometimes 6 meters under water already, and another 40 are or at risk of sinking, or uninhabitable or begins to be uninhabitable because they cannot cultivate anymore because the land became inundated with salty water already.

I want to plead with all the planet people. Please stop killing animals. Please have compassion. Please turn to vegetarian diet. Please be vegan. That is to save yourselves and your children.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: So, organic vegan diet is the answer.

Ground level ozone responsible for increased mortality.

After studying 500,000 people in the US over an 18-year period, Dr. Michael Jerrett of the University of California-Berkeley and colleagues found that residents of the regions with the highest levels of atmospheric ozone were 25% to 30% more likely to succumb to lung disease than those living where the air was more pure. Dr. Jarret Jerrett stated, “We now know that controlling ozone is not only beneficial for mitigating global warming, but that it could also have near-term benefits in the reduction of deaths from respiratory causes. This is the first time we've been able to connect chronic exposure to ozone, one of the most widespread pollutants in the world, with the risk of death.” Ground level ozone is a component of smog, which is one of the main factors of respiratory conditions.

Dr. Jarret Jerrett and colleagues at the University of California – Berkeley, we thank you for clarifying the adverse effect of ozone emissions on health and the environment. May your findings inspire our renewed efforts toward sustainable lifestyles to restore the planet’s ecosphere.

At an international gathering with our Association members in February 2008, Supreme Master Ching Hai shared her relatively early insights on the health effects of atmospheric pollutants and the solution to the global warming caused by such agents.

Call for twenty-year ban on fishing in one-third of the world’s oceans.

A review of 100 scientific reports on restoring fish populations by Dr. Callum Roberts, marine conservation professor at the University of York in the United Kingdom revealed a consensus recommendation toward protection of 20 to 40 percent of the sea. Currently only 0.8 percent of the world
’s oceans are protected. Dr. Roberts further stated that technological developments have allowed extreme fishing exploitation of previously untouched areas, leading to the collapse of many marine environments. US-based environmental organization Friends of the Earth, along with UK-based charities Marine Conservation Society and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds all support a 30 percent closure of the world’s oceans to help restore depleted fish numbers.

Our gratitude Dr. Roberts, Friends of the Earth, Marine Conservation Society and Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for bringing to the public
’s attention the dire state of our precious marine life. Let us easily cease all consumption of fish through the Earth-saving plant-based diet and rejoice as life in the seas flourishes once again.

During a July 2008 videoconference in Germany, Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke of the oceans and our need in this case to spare the lives of fish, reminding of their unique contributions to the marine world, which itself is a vital aspect of our environment.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
Hamburg Center, Germany
– July 18, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Because, fishing eating is also very depleting to planetary ecosystem. They have proven that overfishing of sardines has resulted in many dead zones. They are there for maybe oxidizing the ocean, give life to some other kind of species or cleaning the environment. Whatever the species that God has left on the planet, they have work to do. Just like humans, we have work to do. Animals, they have work to do. Even little fish like sardines, they have work to do. It's just many humans think it is a little fish; they think they're useless so they fish them up and eat them. But they're very, very useful to our ecosystem and to the health of the planet, and, consequently, to the health of humans and all beings on it.

Drought-stressed trees sensitized to rising temperatures.

A study at the University of Arizona’s Biosphere 2 in the USA showed that pin~on pine trees would lose their lives five times faster from an atmospheric 4 degree Celsius increase in temperature. This was the first time that scientists isolated and studied heat as a factor in trees’ fatalities during drought. Professor David Bresheers of the school’s Natural Resources department said, "The Biosphere 2 experiment is a critical next step to understanding how global climate change can trigger large-scale vegetation changes in dramatically short timescales."

Thank you Professor Bresheers and University of Arizona Biosphere 2 lab researchers, for these significant findings on the potential impacts of climate change. Let us act now in preserving the life-giving trees to restore our verdant ecosphere.

During a January 2009 international global warming videoconference in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Supreme Master Ching Hai highlighted the importance of the choosing the noble way of life in order to save the Earth from the detrimental consequences of global warming.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai Global Warming – SOS International Conference
January 27, 2009 – Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Only now, when the planet starts heating up, then we begin to do research about the harmful effect of a meat diet. So, we all know that it’s hard to quit this, but it’s harder to lose our planet. It’s harder to lose this only home for our children. If we have a choice, exchange that piece of meat for the whole planet, and all the lives and everything else on the planet, all the comfort and the inventions, all the life that we’re having, it is worth it. But people must know why, they must be informed. If people know what it is, why they should stop eating meat, I think they will stop right away, if they know.

Carbon Sinks Losing The Battle With Rising Emissions

Emissions rising too fast for oceans and forests. Dr. Mike Raupach, co-chair of the Global Carbon Project and scientist at Australia
’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), has reported that the elements of nature such as forests, grasslands and oceans have been absorbing CO2 at unprecedented rates because of a continued increase in human-caused carbon emissions. In fact, these natural carbon absorbers can no longer keep up. Dr. Andreas Fischlin of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology explains how this situation could lead to a serious global warming tipping point.

Dr. Andreas Fischlin
– Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (M): Land ecosystems, which are currently sequestering about one quarter of all emissions, will stop doing that, and they will actually switch into becoming a source of CO2, so they will add to our own emissions, which will require us even to more compensate this if we would get to this point. So they would accelerate climate change instead what they’re doing now, they are slowing it down. So we must not lose that service from land ecosystems. The point where you actually switch from being a sink and sequestering carbon and to becoming a source in emitting carbon is a tipping point.

VOICE: Knowing this, Dr. Mike Raupach stated,
“Such a change would have drastic consequences for the predicted magnitude or speed of climate change occurring.”

We appreciate your insights, Drs. Raupach and Fischlin. Our prayers that this knowledge will help bring about quick and effective actions to avoid irreversible trends such as these.

In a videoconference in February with the 12th President of the Philippines, His Excellency Mr. Fidel Ramos, during his visit to our Association
’s Center in Taipei, Formosa (Taiwan), Supreme Master Ching Hai described the benefits of organic farming, together with minimizing livestock production, to quickly remove harmful greenhouse gas emissions from the environment.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
and 12th President of the Philippines, Mr. Fidel Ramos
Act Now! - For a More Peaceful and Safer World Taipei, Formosa (Taiwan) February 21, 2009

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Now scientific studies have found that organic farming not only reduces energy usage and produces less CO2, which helps lower greenhouse gases, but it actually allows the soil to absorb even 40% of presently in the air CO2 emission. Before we even invent any technology to reduce CO2, or before we even reduce all the cars and transportations, if we go organic we reduce 40% of the current CO2 in the air already, and the daily emission.

If we reduce the livestock raising, then we can reduce all the toxic gases lingering in our air right now. Hydrogen sulfide, Yes. that is one of the toxic gases, deadly gases which is emitted fromlivestock, yes. Another is methane. Another is, of course, CO2. And the methane can even trigger more CO2 if it warm the climate. So, encourage organic farming. Be vegan.

Mekong Delta: salt water deeply encroaches on land

Mekong Delta facing water crisis. Farmers in A^u La.c
’s (Vietnam) premier rice growing region are concerned that crops now in the fields may fail as salinity levels reach record highs. Currently, brackish waters are advancing 50 km inland due to rising sea levels and may reach as far as 70 km by the time the rainy season alleviates the situation. The problems of the encroaching sea waters are compounded by increasing demands for fresh water by agriculture and industry, which have caused river levels and underground water tables to fall further. Compared to eight years ago, the Tân Châu River in An Giang Province is now nearly 80 centimeters lower, while in Ha^.u Giang Province, residents in areas where wells have turned salty now must try to have fresh water transported from other sources.

We pray that Heaven will protect the people of A^u La.c in this difficult time. May humanity
’s wiser and more compassionate regard for our planet meanwhile restore the balance of our earthly home.

Concerned for the escalating global shortages of both water and food, Supreme Master Ching Hai has repeatedly encouraged the world
’s population to turn to the life-saving plant-based lifestyle. The following is an excerpt from an international gathering with Supreme Master Ching Hai on August 20, 2008.

International Gathering August 20, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Meat consumption is the one that takes away all things. Water, cereals, and the vegetable protein, 90 percent of it. So, it
’s taking away a lot of the world resources. And water, 70 percent of it. So even if we don’t shower, we don’t brush teeth, it amounts to nothing when they don’t stop eating meat. We’re going to damage this planet. The resources will be running out. It’s already running out.

And also a lot of people stockpiling their food also, because they worry about climate change. But before that, the food is already short. 862 million people are hungry worldwide, this year alone, because of meat diet. Because all the food are fed to the animals; the resources and the land and everything. It
’s not like if they eat meat then everything healthy and good and happy for them, and they could be enjoying forever. It’s not. If they keep eating like that, they will also be gone. If the Earth gone, and finally no more resources, nothing else to eat then.

Toxin in algal blooms sink to ocean floor to poison marine life

Harmful algae blooms poison marine animals and birds. Researchers at the University of South Carolina in the USA have determined that harmful algae blooms (HABs) often end up on the ocean’s floor, where the neurotoxin domoic acid poisons other species in the marine ecosystem, including sea birds and shellfish. Harmful algal blooms are caused by agricultural runoff containing nitrates and phosphates from chemical fertilizers and livestock production. Although domoic acid easily dissolves in sunlight and seawater, when the HABs bind together and sink, the toxin stays on the ocean floor for weeks, where it is consumed by shellfish, crustaceans or other fish. It has also been linked to seizures in marine mammals such as sea lions.

Our gratitude, University of South Carolina researchers, for alerting us to this additional human-caused threat to the marine ecosystem. May we be inspired toward avoiding the consumption of our marine co-inhabitants as we also work to restore the environmental balance in which they can thrive.

In a videoconference for the Heart-Touch Tour of the Supreme Master Ching Hai: Eden on Earth Arts Gallery Exhibition, Supreme Master Ching Hai called on all people to be better stewards of the Earth for the protection of our marine co-inhabitants.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Wild species suffer similar fates because we also drain our chemical substances, insecticides, pesticides into the rivers, into the lakes, into the oceans. So we lost many of these precious species, we lost many, many of us, because they are us. And we also lose ourselves, many of us humans, because of these substances, the poisonous substances - even from the farm industry -and we still did not wake up yet.

So we must protect the environment. And the wild, they can take care of themselves. If the environments are friendly and conducive to a healthy lifestyle, then the wild will never get sick. The wild will have no problem.

the Arctic Ocean will probably be ice free by the end of this century

Melting of Arctic puts us in a perilous situation. Following a visit to Siberia several weeks ago, Dr. Katey Walter, an ecologist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in the USA stated that the permafrost is melting at an unprecedented rate across the Arctic. She said, “Lakes in Siberia are five times bigger than when I measured them in 2006. It's unprecedented. This is a global event now.” Norwegian scientists also recently reported a steady and relatively large increase in atmospheric methane levels since 2004, which they believe is due to the thawing of permafrost in North America and Russia. With methane’s warming potential averaged over 20 years being some 72 times higher than that of CO2, excessive release of this gas could accelerate global warming beyond our control.

Our gratitude, Norwegian scientists and Dr. Katey Walter for your eye-opening reports on the urgency of the global warming crisis. We pray that all heed the warning signs and act now in vital areas such as eliminating meat consumption to halt the production of atmospheric methane and save our Mother Earth.

In a June 2008 videoconference in London, United Kingdom, Supreme Master Ching Hai further explained the connection between the accelerated rate of melting permafrost and livestock raising, the most serious cause of atmospheric warming.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
London Center United Kingdom June 13, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: So now, the permafrost layer is melting each day. And the methane gas, or other gas even, are releasing into the atmosphere. I really hope and pray that someone is listening. Methane and nitrous oxide is made by stock raising, stock keeping, animals keeping. They are far more poisonous, far more dangerous than CO2. Because the atmosphere is getting warmer and so the methane is bubbling out. If we stop the worst cause of global warming, meaning stock raising, animal breeding, then we will be able to save the planet.

Briny pools 'may exist on Mars'

Salt water may be present on Mars. Researchers have observed what may be salty moisture droplets on a metal brace of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration
’s (NASA)’s Mars Phoenix Lander. This observation, combined with a finding of perchlorate salts in Martian soil that can keep water liquid at temperatures of minus 70 degrees Celsius, have led to the conclusion that pockets of liquid may exist elsewhere on the planet. US Phoenix mission scientist and University of Michigan professor Dr. Nilton Renno said, “Liquid water is an essential ingredient for life. This discovery has important implications for many areas of planetary exploration, including the habitability of Mars.”

Congratulations Dr. Renno and participating researchers on this fascinating finding! We are, as ever, excited to learn more about our extraordinary planetary neighbor.

Through both her inner knowledge and telepathic communication with the Mars people, Supreme Master Ching Hai has on several occasions spoken of Mars
’ past – how the planet is still recovering since global warming like that now being faced on Earth led to a mass extinction 40 million years ago. The following revealing discussion with Supreme Master Ching Hai about Mars was held in January 2009 with Supreme Master Television staff in California, USA.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
With Supreme Master Television staff
California, USA January 18, 2009

Supreme Master TV: Are the Martians working on restoring their planet to its original state right now?

Supreme Master Ching Hai: They can
’t. They can’t. It’s not for human to even restore this kind of catastrophically destructed planet. But the planet will revive itself by natural process. And it takes 1 more million years; 1 million years more and Mars will be inhabitable. Small bushes will begin to grow and then weeds and grass and then fruit trees, etc, etc. Rivers and streams and sea will begin to form again. And gradually human and animals will be able to settle on Mars’ surface again.

Va(n Ho'a Magazine features Supreme Master Ching Hai’s words of wisdom on climate change.

Va(n Ho'a Magazine features Supreme Master Ching Hai’s words of wisdom on climate change. The current February-March 2009 issue of Va(n Ho'a Magazine, headed by esteemed chief editor and publisher Mr. Ly' Kie^'n Tru'c, and considered a great contribution to the Aulacese (Vietnamese) community, features the article, “Supreme Master Ching Hai and Her Global Warming Alarm Bell,” which presents the urgent matter of global warming, with excerpts from Supreme Master Ching Hai’s insightful remarks and advice given during numerous videoconferences with our Association members as well as dignitaries and the public. The following is an excerpt from this issue of Va(n Ho'a magazine:

“Faced by the immeasurable upheaval of global warming, Supreme Master Ching Hai, a humanitarian, an artist, and a spiritual teacher, has wholeheartedly devoted her efforts to protecting the environment by her practical actions through conferences with scientists around the world, in order to bring forth a better life for people, so that humans and all other beings are able to live in peace and harmony. With an open heart, an immense love of the boundless that goes beyond any frontier of culture and race, she has always lived by her expectation of a brighter future for Earth.”

VOICE: The article concludes by echoing support for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s dream for the world, which would grant all inhabitants a profound peace as well as secure the planet’s future.

“The dream is so simple, yet so noble! We pray that thousands of people will understand your aspiration, and understand your pain to quickly change their heart and mind.
All it takes is to eat vegetarian diet,
To become a vegetarian,
And choose the vegetarian lifestyle.
Then everything will settle down. Natural disasters will not happen again. And especially global warming will also vanish.
One day, when our co-inhabitants are no longer subject to being killed, how highly civilized our Earth will be!
The question is are we ready for the vegetarian lifestyle now?
The answer is now or it is too late.”

VOICE: Our hearts resonate with the earnest and hopeful message conveyed by Va(n Ho'a Magazine, whom we laud and appreciate. We too are ever grateful for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s beacon of guidance and confidence in humanity to meet the climate challenge. May similarly noble-minded media everywhere join in the call for the vital choice of veg, so that all may soon live on a heavenly Earth.

Maldives: water shortage hits 12 islands, one family spending 85% of income on bottled water

12 islands in the Maldives face extreme water shortage. With islanders largely dependent on rainwater to meet their water needs, scarcity caused by recent droughts has brought response from the country’s National Disaster Management Center (NDMC), a government agency established after the devastating 2004 tsunami. Thus far, 763 tons of water has been delivered to eight of the drought-affected islands, with the other four still in need. Deputy Director-general of the NDMC Moosa Ali Kaleyfaan stated that the agency is installing desalination facilities on a boat that can travel from island to island, but that more permanent remedies are needed.

Many thanks, National Disaster Management Center and Maldives for your timely care that is helping safeguard the lives of affected fellow citizens. May we all be reminded to appreciate the precious resource of clear water, one of Mother Earth’s many gifts of life.

Supreme Master Ching Hai has emphasized that the only permanent remedy and certain refuge we all have in the face of global warming is our own virtuous lifestyle. The following comes from a discussion during an international seminar in Europe with our Association members in August 2008.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai International Seminar, Europe August 22, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: But nowadays the disasters are more frequent than ever. If it’s not earthquake, then it is storm, typhoon, drought. This is even more permanent disaster than just earthquake, which lasts not long. Anyway, the bad karma has to be paid. If the people turn to noble lifestyle, just even be vegetarian to save the planet, to save the animals, that’s enough to save them also. But they have to listen.

Even if you pray for the earthquake not to happen, something else will happen to those people who have to experience this kind of thing unless they turn their heart around and take refuge in their own loving great power, compassionate nature; that’s their only refuge. On one hand, we feel very sorry for the people; on the other hand, it’s not much help we can do for them. We can pray for world peace, we can pray for the planet as a whole, but people have to change.

Livestock methane emissions higher than earlier estimates

India releases increased methane estimates. The most recently analyzed data has shown that India’s methane emissions from livestock climbed from an estimated 9 metric tons in 1997 to 11.75 metric tons in 2003. The country’s 485 million animals is also the largest population of livestock in the world. Researchers K.R. Manjunath and Abha Chhabra estimate that the main reason for the increase was an influx of dairy cows. According to the United Nations, livestock produces 37 percent of all human-induced methane, a greenhouse gas that traps up to 72 times more heat in the atmosphere than CO2.

Messrs. Manjunath and Chhabra, our gratitude for your work in highlighting the role of animal-based food products in accelerating global climate change. May we all be guided to benefit animals, humans and the environment through our adoption of the low emission plant-based diet.

Supreme Master Ching Hai has also helped us to see the larger picture of the costs related to consuming animal products that go even beyond greenhouse gas emissions. The following is an excerpt from a discussion with dignitaries and media representatives at the SOS! International Seminar on Global Warming held in South Korea on May 22, 2008.

SOS! International Seminar on Global Warming Live Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai South Korea May 22, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: You see the meat diet not only causes the greatest emission of poisonous gas into the planet atmosphere but many other costs. It’s not only the animal who emits the methane gas because we keep multiplying the animals and they keep multiplying, spraying gas into the air. But that’s not only the damage. It’s not only methane gas from the animals’ waste. There is the transportation energy cost; there’s electricity energy cost; there’s water wasting cost; there’s a land resource occupation cost; there’s a deforestation cost, and there’s a related illness medical cost; and there’s the grievance, sorrow of the people who lost loved ones due to disease related to meat diet cost.

And because we use food to feed livestock for human consumption instead of feeding directly to humans, therefore, there is cost of war and famine due to shortage of food and resources. Add them together, then we will see the real answer.

Fish consumption causes environmental devastation.

A Canadian Medical Association Journal report urges health care practitioners to recommend plant-based fats instead of fish because health benefits from have actually been found to be questionable, and the devastation to global fish supply is clear.|

Their report states, “These trends imply the collapse of all commercially exploited stocks by mid-century. Yet the dire status of fisheries resources is largely unrecognized by the public, who are both encouraged to eat more fish and are misled into believing we live in a sea of plenty.” The scientists also point out that commercial fisheries are not a viable solution because up to five pounds of small fish are taken from the ocean to grow one pound of commercial fish. They suggest that healthcare practitioners instead recommend the healthy Omega-3 fatty acids from algae, yeast, and other plant sources.

We are encouraged by your report, Canadian researchers. Our prayers that people everywhere receive this message and understand that plant-based foods preserve our own health and that of our valued aquatic co-inhabitants.

In a videoconference in December 2008 with dignitaries and the media in California, USA, Supreme Master Ching Hai emphasized the spiritual need to include all animals, including fish, in a compassionate meat-free diet.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
Celestial Art Book Premiere – English edition California, USA December 12, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: I was informed also that people eat all kinds of things and call themselves vegetarian, even chicken vegetarian and fish vegetarian and all that. So now the definition is vegan. Vegan means absolutely no to all animal products, even to wear or to advertise for it, or to support anybody who does harm to animals in anyway at all.

We have to protect the animals because that means protecting our great Selves. Because our great Self is love, our true Self is compassion. If we do not protect the animals, that means we are damaging, ruining, depleting, harming our true Self, which is love, which is noble, which is compassion. That’s what it is, protect others means protect us. Protect animals means we’re growing in greatness. We recognize again our great Self.

China is facing more and more severe weather challenges Haze

China affected by severe climate-related weather patterns. Prolonged drought this past winter with precipitation levels at 70-90 percent below normal has resulted in loss of vital crops for at least 12 provinces. The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters estimates that 44 percent of the country’s winter wheat crop has been damaged, with other crops threatened as well. A state of emergency was already declared once this year in Beijing due to the crop failures and water shortage, which has affected more than 4.3 million residents overall. The nation has promised some US$13 billion in drought relief to be paid mostly to farmers who have suffered loss.

Another climate-related condition is desertification, brought about primarily by earlier deforestation. The desert area, which is said to be encroaching at a rate of 1,300 square miles per year, has already submerged some northern villages. Furthermore, winds sweeping across the desertified regions send huge amounts of sand blowing across the country to places such as Beijing, where the first “yellow dust storm” of the year just arrived. Even citizens in more distant South Korea have been purchasing extra air purifiers to cope with the forecast of multiple storms of windborne sand and accompanying pollutants.

We pray for the safety of those affected by these disturbing global warming conditions. May this trend quickly subside as we aid the environment by offering animals their rightful co-existence through our adoption of the plant-based diet.

During a June 2008 videoconference with our Association members in the United Kingdom, Supreme Master Ching Hai highlighted, as she has done on other occasions, the clear link between humans’ moral actions and nature’s destabilization.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai Surrey Center United Kingdom
June 12, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: “As you sow, so shall you reap.” “Like attracts like.” Scientifically speaking, spiritually speaking, we have been warned. So, all the disasters that have happened around the world, of course, are connected with the human unkindness to the co-inhabitants. That was the price we have to pay for what we have done to the innocents who have done us no harm, who are also the children of God, who have been sent to Earth to help us and to cheer our days. Because, generally, humans also have very good merit before they came to Earth.

And that’s why they became human, because of their good merit. So, from their good merit, there has been give and take and deductions and additions. Otherwise, if these things have not been canceling out some of the bad retribution then it would have been worse. Or the Earth might have been disappeared all together already, but luckily the humans also do have some good merit and it has not run out yet.

Livestock contributes more to climate change than previous estimates.

In 2006, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization had estimated that animal agriculture was responsible for 18% of global warming. However, it is becoming increasingly clear to scientists that the industry is playing a more significant role.

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, chief of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) hinted at this during a talk he gave in September 2008 on the role of reducing meat consumption in addressing global warming.

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri
– Chair of United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, VEGETARIAN (M): Since people found out about this talk that I was going to give here today, I’ve received a number of emails from people that I respect saying that the 18% figure is an underestimate; it’s a low estimate and in actual fact it’s much higher.

VOICE: Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a renowned researcher and internationally bestselling author of
“The China Study,” also indicated that livestock’s role in heating the planet is much bigger.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell
– Renowned nutrition researcher, Cornell University, USA, VEGAN (M): I just had some information just recently, that the new figures now indicate that at least half of the greenhouse gases that are up there now, not that 15 or 20%, at least half – and maybe considerably more – are due to livestock production.

VOICE: The United Nations
’ 18% estimate follows virtually every step of the meat producing process, including enteric fermentation and manure, deforestation for grazing and feed crop production, transport, processing, refrigeration, and more.

LIVESTOCK GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION SOURCES:
1. Enteric fermentation
2. Manure management and application
3. Nitrogen fertilizer emission
4. On farm fossil fuel use to raise livestock
5. Deforestation of pasture
6. Deforestation for feed crops
7. Feed crop production
8. On farm fossil fuel to produce feed
9. Nitrogen deposition
10. Soil carbon losses due to burning, erosion, harvests, and grazing
11. Transporting animals to slaughter
12. Processing the meat
13. Refrigeration
14. Transporting the meat

VOICE: Accounted for are the three major greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, the latter two of which are shorter-lived but while in the atmosphere cause much more damage than carbon dioxide. However, what is unaccounted for is the fact that methane may be as much as 100 times more effective at trapping heat in the Earth
’s atmosphere than carbon dioxide, compared to a 23 times estimate used in most reports – including that of the United Nations. Dr. Kirk Smith is a professor at the University of California – Berkeley in the United States, as well as a member of the IPCC and the US National Academy of Scientists.

Dr. Kirk R. Smith
– Professor, University of California – Berkeley, USA (M): Already livestock is 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions, excuse me, the meat system, which includes the animals, includes growing the food for the animals, includes the transport of the meat, includes the fertilizer to grow the food to feed the meat. And that’s with not treating methane any more than the sort of normal way it is used.

VOICE: Dr. Smith believes that by factoring in methane
’s truer global warming potential, livestock emissions would be calculated to be higher.

Dr. Kirk R. Smith (M): If you treat it more, then that 20% will go up to maybe 30%. So the 30%, in the next 20 years, is going to be due to meat production.

VOICE: In addition, according to US physicist Noam Mohr, livestock have an even larger share of emissions when yet another unaccounted factor is acknowledged: aerosols, or particles released along with CO2 from burning fossil fuels that actually have a cooling effect.

Voice of Noam Mohr
– Physicist with degrees from Yale University and University of Pennsylvania, USA, VEGETARIAN (M): When you consider aerosols and consider the net effect of burning fossil fuels, the carbon dioxide released heats the planet, the aerosols cool the planet, and the net effect roughly cancels each other out. That means that most of the warming we have seen historically and are likely to see in the future comes from other gases, namely methane.

VOICE: We thank the distinguished scientists for this revealing information. May your research continue to be updated and illuminate our decisions in the wisest direction. We pray that humanity
’s bold action to reduce meat consumption and meat production will quickly bring us to a safer situation.

In a July 2008 videoconference with our Association members in Thailand, Supreme Master Ching Hai revealed through her deep insight the reality of animal agriculture
’s cumulative cause in global warming.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
With Bangkok, Thailand Center
– July 24, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Because meat producing causes 80% of global warming. Transportation, water, deforestation, refrigeration, medical care for animals and humans, and etc, etc. All kinds of pollution coming from meat production. It
’s not just the land that they use, it’s not just the methane gas and nitrous oxide that they produce, it is all its by-product; there’s no end to the list. We cannot rely on green technology alone to save the planet. Because the worst cause of it is from the meat industry. Everybody knows it; all the scientists already report it to us.

Acidity kills fish as rivers dry up

Aquatic life in danger due to drying rivers. As the region continues to face extreme drought, data shows that water levels in Australia
’s Murray-Darling Basin linger at just 16% of capacity, nearing record lows. Meanwhile, the water’s acidity is on the rise, causing countless fish to lose their lives in the shallow rivers off the Murray. People have also been affected, with the loss of crop irrigation causing growers sacrifice businesses and homes. Even drinking water is at risk, with dry conditions increasing the chance of algal blooms that would contaminate this key resource of many small towns.

We pray for the resiliency of the Australian people as they endure these difficult times. May the balance of Mother Nature return as we all step in unison to adopt sustainable and planet-friendly lifestyles.

During an August 2008 videoconference with our Association members in Sydney, Australia, Supreme Master Ching Hai once again expressed her concern for the fragile state of our ecosphere and, as in other occasions, reminded of the government and media
’s role in helping address the root cause and only solution for global warming.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: The governments of the world already are aware of the dire situation of our planet. So I hope they will act as soon as possible and on time, to save themselves, as well as the people.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Especially it
’s up to the government and the media to help to alleviate the situation. If they don’t turn into the compassionate way of life, then I don’t know what else to do.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: The law of cause and retribution has to take place, no matter we like it or not. There is no escape from that. And we are trying to let people know this, to remind them the law of universe. To remind them of their true great compassionate, loving Self, and now it
’s up to people. I wish I have a magic wand and wave it around and hoop-la, everybody become vegetarian, planet is saved. But it’s not like that. They have to awaken themselves. They have to practice compassion. Then the compassion will beget compassion; love will beget love.

Things That Happened Before Resuming Work, Part 3:

1 نظرات

After spending a very busy day filming action scenes in the middle of a sandstorm, I had a meeting with the director and Leehom Wang. When the meeting ended, I was afraid to go to sleep because I knew that I had to leave Yuanmou at 3.30 in the morning and drive to Kunming airport. So I started sorting out my things and packing my bags instead. I really had a lot of things to pack. Today was my last day in Yuanmou because after I finish doing promotional activities for Shinjuku Incident, the next time I come back to China I’ll be in Kunming. Therefore, I needed to take my time and sort out my belongings into different categories such as things I need to take back to Hong Kong, things I need to bring with me to Kunming, and things I need to send back to Beijing. By the time I finished, it was already 2:12 a.m. and I wondered if I should sleep for a little while or not sleep at all. In the end, I really didn’t have anything else to pack so I decided to lie down in bed and rest my eyes for a while. Of course I fell asleep.

I don’t know how much time had passed before I was awakened by my assistant. When I opened my eyes it was already three o’clock in the morning. I don’t know if I slept for 20 minutes or maybe half an hour.

When we left Yuanmou, we had to drive two cars because we had to return one of the cars to someone else, so I was in charge of driving one of them. Initially I had planned to drive just half of the journey and then let the other driver take over the other half but the driver was from Beijing and he wasn’t very familiar with the directions; even I was more familiar than he was. So for safety reasons, I decided to drive the whole way.

Throughout the journey I saw so many stars. I don’t usually get to see this in the big city. While I was at the gas station filling up the car, I looked up towards the sky and wow! An infinite blanket of stars covered the sky. It was so beautiful.

After filling the car with gas, I continued driving to the airport. On the way, I saw some small vehicles that had fallen into the ditches on the sides of the village roads. The roads were quite bumpy and uneven and I noticed that the highway department was doing some reconstruction, although some sections of the road hadn’t been completed yet. I drove on a completed section of the highway that was flat and smooth for one and a half hours. Afterwards, the road became a little rough and bumpy again, and there weren’t even any street lights on the side of the road. Even so, I saw that they were in the process of fixing and improving the roads. I believe that over the next couple of years, this road will definitely be a good road to travel on. But for the meantime, everyone will just have to endure the bumps for a little while longer. We started driving in the early hours of the morning and I think because it was really early and drivers on the road were tired so they couldn’t concentrate. I saw three separate car accidents throughout the journey.

When I starting driving in an area that I wasn’t too familiar with, I let the other car lead the way and I followed behind them. As we were driving inside a tunnel, I suddenly saw a truck hit the side of the wall, rebound, then swerve back onto the middle of the road. The truck nearly hit the car in front of us. I think the driver of the truck must have fallen asleep at the wheel otherwise this wouldn’t have happened. He nearly caused a car accident.

I was driving behind the cars and I saw everything happen in front of me. The incident gave me such a fright that it instantly woke me up. In my mind I kept telling myself that I was driving a car, I had to stay alert. I was very relieved that staff members in the other car were okay because if that truck really did collided with the car traveling in front of us, I don’t think I’d be able to make it back to Hong Kong. Not only that, all the passengers in the other car would have to be admitted into the hospital.

After driving a rather dangerous journey, we managed to arrive at the airport ahead of schedule. The check-in counters at the airport weren’t even open yet. Fortunately, it was still early in the morning and there weren’t many cars around so the police officer allowed me to park my car on the side of the road. I was so tired that I fell asleep inside the car.

In the end, the group of us traveling together boarded the plane. After sitting down in our seats, I immediately went to sleep. The flight took less than two hours and I was back in Hong Kong.

Arriving into Hong Kong marked the start of my nonstop schedule. I didn’t go home, I went straight to the hotel, washed up, changed my clothes, and then started doing the thing that I dislike doing the most - promotional work. But doing this is all part of making a film. As actors and crew members of the production team, when a movie is complete, we have to make an effort and assist with promoting the film. The main actors and the director were going to attend the event so how could I not go! I was told that several female actresses had only just gotten off the plane and were rushing to get from the airport to the venue of the promotional event as well.
I’ve just come from a place with sandstorm conditions and smooth flowing traffic to a city with tall buildings and lots of traffic congestion, and I’m walking into a venue where everyone is elegantly dressed and looking glamorous. It was only yesterday that I was in the wilderness wearing antique period clothing. Now I’m in a modern city wearing a beautiful outfit. It’s surreal; I feel as though I’m dreaming.

After bustling around for an entire day, I had dinner with an actor whom I like a lot, Jiang Wen, and we discussed some plans to work together in the near future. I only drank two glasses of red wine with him but it affected me as though I’d taken some medication; I had that complacent drifting sensation. I must have been exhausted so I quickly said my goodbyes and then went straight home.

When I got back home, I fed my two cats and dogs and then went to sleep. By the time I opened my eyes again, I looked at the clock and it gave me such a fright because I had to work again today and I was nearly running late. So I quickly got out of bed, washed up, and then set out to attend another event for the upcoming Hong Kong International Film Festival.

I am very lucky and extremely happy that my new movie, Shinjuku Incident, was selected to be the opening movie for the Hong Kong Film Festival. After several screenings of the movie, there have been a lot of comments and criticisms that have come to light. Some people said that the movie was shocking; they never imagined that I would make this type of movie, and they raised the question about whether the film was too violent and graphic. I think real the problem for me is that when a lot of people watch my films, they still think of me as “Jackie Chan.” I hope that when other people watch my films, they don’t see me as Jackie Chan. I want them to see me as the character in the movie, as an actor. I truly hope that one day I will become the Robert De Niro of Asia or the Dustin Hoffman of Asia, being flexible with acting in any different kind of character and performing the role well. I’m not the young Jackie Chan kid that I used to be anymore. I need to change. Over the years I’ve been continuously changing, starting from when I made Gorgeous, then later with New Police Story, The Myth, and Rob-B-Hood. I recently finished The Spy Next Door. I’ve been changing during this time. The theme for Shinjuku Incident is actually quite serious; I play a small role in Big Soldier, the film that I’m making at the moment; in Karate Kid, the role I’m going to play is a teacher; after that, I’m going to play a character called Emperor Chu the Conqueror. I want to try various roles in different areas because I want people to know and identify me as an actor. I want you to see a different me, the different sides there are to me.

A lot of people have been asking me when I plan on retiring. Well, the thing about retiring is that it seems so far away for me yet it also seems so close. The reason why I say it seems close is because I can pretty much retire whenever I feel like it. But it also seems far away because I honestly don’t know when. Why do I say this? Mainly because I just recently set up a new company in China and I hope to nurture some new artists as well as produce more films and television series. As for my own plans with filming, my schedule is full of work up until 2015. The planning has never stopped. Every script is still in the process of being produced.

The film Shinjuku Incident is about people from different countries around the world. There are people from Africa, Sudan, Vietnam, China, and many other nations. Their greatest desire is to live in other developed countries and they are willing to do anything to achieve this – even if it means that they become illegal immigrants. There are a lot of untold tragic stories here, some of which I already know about because after traveling the world for so many years, especially in Japan, I was told a few. About twenty or thirty years ago, there were a lot of Chinese people who went to Japan illegally and worked there illegally in the black market. I know there are a lot of people from different countries around the world working illegally in Japan. Now I’m only taking one part of the story from a Chinese person’s perspective, making it into a film, showing the viewers what it’s like to be an illegal immigrant and the consequences of working illegally in the black market. I honestly think that living and working in one’s own country is always the best option. If you’re living in your own country, you will always be top priority citizen. If you’re in another country, you will only ever be treated as a second-class, third-class, or even a forth-class citizen. How I think of it is that there is no other country like your own home country.

Shinjuku Incident is directed by Derek Yee and the story took over three years to write. They researched and found a true story about a person, and then re-wrote the account into a script based on this story. When I decided to cooperate with Derek Yee, I never actually asked him about the script and I didn’t ask him about what character I’d play in the movie. I was willing to do whatever he wanted me to do because Derek is a director I respect very highly. When other directors come to me wanting to cooperate, the first thing I ask them is can they pay me my asking price; the second thing I’d ask is that they let me read the script. I have to ask these things before I even consider making a film with them. However, when making a film with Derek Yee, I don’t need to contemplate about the money issue and I didn’t even think about whether or not the script would be good. I totally trust him because he is a director worth trusting.

People who have already seen this film have said that it was a shocking movie. They never imagined that I would make that kind of film. This is the type of reaction that I’m looking for, the type of change that I want. I want to give people a different and refreshing feeling that surprises them. When you watch Shinjuku Incident, you will see a different Jackie Chan. I am an actor.
A lot of people have asked me why I gave up the market for this movie in China. I know there are a lot of young viewers who enjoy watching my movies and while I was making this film, I knew there were going to be some scenes that might be too violent or gruesome for the audience to watch. I already chose to shoot some scenes from two different angles; one as a long shot from a distance, the other a close up shot. I even thought about some other things after we finished the film. I might think that the final cut is good but how were we going to release it in the cinemas around China? What about the young kids? So, we decided to edit a gentle version of the movie that was more suitable for the general audience and then tested it on some viewers. But after they watched it, they came out shaking their heads saying that they didn’t know what the story was talking about. For example, the movement of the hand by someone holding a knife was cut out; someone saying, “You better leave…” was also cut out. So a lot of the times throughout the movie, viewers got the feeling that something was missing and it didn’t make sense. If we really edited the movie into this version and it was released in cinemas around China, I’m pretty sure that the audience watching the movie would definitely have no idea what the story was about. They would question our ability, asking why we even bothered making such a terrible and incomplete movie. If this version were released in the European markets, they definitely wouldn’t accept it there either. So, after making some serious considerations, I decided to sacrifice one of the cinema markets and not release the film there. I might end up having to give up several cinema markets because different countries have their own film standards. The film might seem violent and graphic in Southeast Asia, but it might not seem as bad for the European countries. Ultimately, I had to make a decision and I decided to retain the completeness of the film. The movie will be available for everyone to watch very soon so I’ll let you be the judge of it. I hope you will give me your honest feedback; did you like or dislike the movie? Should I continue to make this kind of film in the future? Do you like my changes?

Apart from being surrounded by this news over the past couple of days, a lot of headlines and stories in the newspaper have been discussing and criticizing my antique historical houses. The actual story behind my antique houses is that I first wanted to buy a house for my dad but I ended up buying seven antique houses and a pavilion. I initially had plans to look for a piece of land somewhere in China so I could put all these houses together in one place. I looked around for quite a while and I wasn’t able to find a suitable location. On top of that, I’ve been very busy with work, and my dad has already passed away, so I thought about maybe constructing a museum in Hong Kong and allowing everyone to view these antique Chinese houses there. However, I’ve been having discussions with the Hong Kong government for ten years already, requesting them to allocate some land for me so I can construct an area where I can put all the houses in one place. The government gave me many reasons and a lot of excuses that dragged the matter up until this day. Recently, the Singaporean government found out that I had some antique historic houses and they got in contact with me. Seven days later, they replied with an offer, promising to allocate me land, cover the shipping costs of relocating the houses, provide people to renovate and restore the houses, and cover the maintenance and operating costs. They’ve given me a lot of freedom and flexibility. I took one breath and then accepted the offer from the Singaporean government, entrusting them with the antique historic houses.

When newspapers announced the news that I gave the historic houses to the Singaporean government, the Hong Kong government became anxious and continuously questioned me about it. I never blamed the Hong Kong government for anything. I did have meetings with two successive governor generals and I know that if they gave me land for my museum, people would disagree and the government would be criticized. But if I give the antique historic houses to the Singaporean government, they would also be criticized. A lot of people have said to me, “Jackie, why don’t you be the governor general?” My instant reaction was an unmistakable no. But if I did become the governor general, I know I would definitely become a strong and powerful governor because I am willing to do anything as long as it doesn’t harm the country, it doesn’t harm Hong Kong, it doesn’t harm Chinese people or people from Hong Kong, and it’s beneficial for Hong Kong.

Something Very Meaningful

First of all, I want to say sorry to everyone for not recording my diary in such a long time. I’ve just been so busy doing this thing or that thing, flying all over the place. I can’t explain exactly what I was busy with but I can say that I was busy with something not related to my usual business work. I couldn’t bring someone along to record my diary all the time, and I didn’t have spare time to record what I did, so that is why I haven’t been able to write a new diary for you to read.

If I had to go back and write about the things that I’ve been doing, all I could tell you is that I attended press conferences, recorded songs, participated in public welfare related events, and things like that. I think everyone is already quite familiar with these activities and nothing really special happened that was worth writing about.

The most meaningful thing that happened for me recently was that we started filming the new movie, which also meant that I could resume my usual lifestyle again. Another thing I thought was very meaningful is that I celebrated Chinese New Year with my family, the three of us, for the first time. In fact, we’ve actually never spent time together over New Years before; this was the first.

To Ban or Not to Ban?

A friend of mine told me that he was going to light up some fireworks at his house in the evening and he invited me over to watch. I went to my friend’s house and I saw that the inside of his garage was all stocked up with fireworks. My friend bought several hundred thousand dollars worth of fireworks. I was so surprised when I saw it, I mean, why would you buy so many fireworks? My friend said to me that the government has banned people from lighting fireworks for a very long time, and now they’ve finally allowed people to light them. On top of that, Chinese people have a traditional custom where lighting up fireworks is symbolic to getting rid of bad luck. I couldn’t help but ask my friend, “What century are you in right now? You still believe that lighting up fireworks and firecrackers will blast away bad luck?! I honestly don’t believe that a person’s luck will get better after lighting up some fireworks.”

My friends lit up the fireworks and the display was absolutely spectacular. But in my mind I just kept thinking to myself, what happens to the smoke that is produced when the fireworks burn? Will it become pollution? Also, what happens to the paper that the fireworks were packaged in? I watched as several hundred boxes of fireworks were continuously burnt away. Just in one night, over 800 tons of paper was burnt on the eve of the Lunar New Year! Not only is this a waste, I honestly think that lighting up fireworks is very dangerous. I talked with my friend again and said, “Seriously, doing this can cause some fire related disasters. Also, the remains of burnt paper after lighting up the fireworks is scattered all over the streets and alleyways, don’t you think this isn’t very environmentally friendly? Don’t light up anymore fireworks next year.” My friend then said to me that this only happens once a year so fireworks should be lit during this time, and he also said that they were very cautious so there won’t be any fires.

This actually reminded of the chewing-gum problem that happened in Singapore. After people finished chewing their gum, some inconsiderate people would carelessly throw it away by sticking it on chairs or on the beautiful floor boards of large public halls. As a result, Singapore banned chewing-gum. But if people who ate chewing-gum didn’t spit it out everywhere then it wouldn’t be banned. Let me give you another example. If we enjoy our right of freedom of speech then we should appreciate our freedom of speech, not abuse it. Right now, the government has allowed people to light up fireworks again so we should cherish this opportunity and take safety into consideration. I mean, does something bad have to happen before we are more careful? Sure enough, something did happen and there was a fire at the CCTV building. It’s been confirmed that the cause of the fire was because of someone carelessly lighting up some fireworks. That is why I ask, should some things be banned? It’s really hard to say, but I think that not affecting other people and not affecting public safety should be the priority.

Dabing Xiaojiang Starts Shooting:

This time I’m working in the Yuanmou Earth Forest in Yunnan. Yuanmou is located in the northern part of the Central Dianzhong plateau and it has three of the world’s greatest natural tourist attractions. One of them is the world renowned Yuanmou Man with its historic culture dating back 1.7 million years. Another is a very rare and amazing geological phenomenon covering an area of 47 square kilometers (18 square miles) – the Yuanmou Earth Forest. The Earth Forest is huge and is also known as the world’s strangest natural formation. The third attraction is the world’s largest dinosaur cemetery with the most complete dinosaur species. They discovered over 160 dinosaur fossils within a 30 square kilometer area (11.6 square miles), dating back to a period between 100 million to 60 million years ago which spans over the early, mid, and late Jurassic Period and the early Cretaceous Period. The Yuanmou man is believed to be the earliest human species found in our country and because of this, the first history lesson taught to children in China is about the Yuanmou man.

The name of this new movie is called Dabing Xiaojiang. I actually wanted to make this film over 20 years ago but I never got around to making it. It wasn’t until I started filming Rush Hour 3 that I decided to tidy up the script and asked director Ding Cheng to film it. While I was busy doing my non-business related things, director Ding was busy doing pre-production work such as scouting for locations, casting the actors, and doing some other preparation work.

We officially started shooting at Yuanmou, Yunnan. Apart from director Ding Cheng, other artists involved with the production include me, Leehom Wang, and Korean actor Yoo Seung Jun. Previously I made an announcement that we weren’t going to have a ceremony to mark the start of filming, but honoring the Gods is something unavoidable when making a new movie. I personally don’t believe in any particular religion but if I can do something for the crew so that everybody feels more at ease, then I’d pay my respects to the Gods as well.

After paying our respects, I stood up on a high platform and said to everyone, “I’m so happy to be back in China for the New Year and filming this new movie. I get to see a lot of old friends and also meet some new ones. But before we start working, I want to tell everyone some of the rules that I have. The cast and crew working on this film have come from many different places; there are people from Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Shanghai, Beijing, Mongolia, and other places. Because we all speak different languages, there is a possibility that there will be some misunderstandings when we communicate at work. I hope that everyone will try and make an effort to adapt with one another, be forgiving and understanding. I don’t smoke, so I hope that everybody else will try their best not to smoke while we’re filming on the set. And please don’t throw your cigarette butts everywhere. Also, when you’ve finished with your lunch boxes and plastic drink bottles, please squash them down before putting them in a garbage bag. These can’t be left lying around either. This is all I ask of everyone to do. On the other hand, if you ask me to do something, I will definitely do it as well. For example, I will make sure that you have more food to eat, provide sufficient drinks for everybody, and also make sure that everyone gets enough time to rest.” Afterwards, I handed out some lucky red packets to mark the start of the production. Each person gets $100. I think there were about 300 people at the venue which meant that I gave out $30,000 worth of red packets. Everybody was very happy after receiving their lucky red packet.

Some of you might not believe what I’m about to say. When I first arrived in Yuanmou, I thought the weather here was very nice. But in the evening, the temperature dropped to minus 10°C (14°F). Even the temperature in the morning was around -10°C (about 10°F). But by midday, it was about 33°C (91°F). In order to adapt to this extreme change in temperature, everyone would put on all their seasonal clothes that they’d wear in summer, winter, autumn, and spring. This way, they can keep warm when it’s cold and then take a few layers off when it gets hot. They can keep taking clothes off until they’re only wearing their summer clothes.

Apart from the extreme temperature changes in the Earth Forest, one other thing that is quite hard to get used to how the dust flies everywhere whenever there is wind movement; anyone walking around the set disturbs the dust. Each day after work, we’d go back to the hotel and take a shower. Everybody has said that the color of the water after washing their hair and body became yellow. Any hole on the body had dust in it. And I don’t mean to sound disgusting but even when I go to the bathroom, it actually looks like that there’s sand in it as well. When we’re working on the set, other people can wear masks to cover their mouths from the dust but as actors, we can’t because we’re in the movie and we also need to have make-up on. Wearing a mask would be very inconvenient and we’d also be worried about smudging our make-up, so the only thing we could do was endure it all.

Also, speaking from my previous experiences, there is some equipment that is totally indispensible when it comes to filming in an Earth Forest, for example an umbrella. The umbrella isn’t used to block the wind and dust but it is used to block the sun. If wearing a down jacket can help fend off the chill in the morning and during evening, then an umbrella can be used like a big shady tree when it gets really hot during the day and there is nothing around you to help shade the sun. Don’t underestimate an umbrella. There are times when shooting a scene where actors have to stand around under the sun, waiting for the director or the cameraman to make the call for the real take. The actors can’t go anywhere and they can’t take off their thick layered costumes if they want a break. All they can do is stand around and wait. At these times, I’d ask crew members on the set to open up an umbrella for them. It doesn’t matter if it’s for an actor, a martial artist, or a stand-in, I’d still ask the crew to open an umbrella for them. Today while we were filming, there was a young stand-in actor who worked under very hot conditions. He couldn’t stand the heat and fainted twice. It was just too hot and he couldn’t handle the heat so in the end, I asked someone to take him back to the hotel for a rest.

Apart from the umbrella, I also brought many of my personal products made by my company to share on the set. For example, the Segways, tents, foldable chairs, multi-purpose waist bags, hats, gloves, face clothes and others. These products may not seem like anything special but when we’re filming out on location, especially when we have to film in an unpredictable environment, these things actually become very useful.

Although the environment at the shooting isn’t that great, the place where we stay at is not bad at all because this is actually a scenic area and the hotel where we live in very beautiful and comfortable.

I think that if you’ve been reading my diaries, you would know that whenever I’m making a film in mainland China, at each place I go to, I’d always make arrangements so that one room is used for the kitchen and one room is for the gym.

All the rooms in this hotel have been fully occupied by the cast and crew of the movie. Everyone in the production lives here. There are rooms for two people, rooms for three people, and even rooms for four people. This is the style that I like; I like to be with the people I work with. I think this is very convenient because I can easily have meetings with people, see everyone, have meals together, and chat. There is a small garden outside the room. This is where I have meetings with the actors and director whenever I have spare time or when I come back from work in the evening. Sometimes we all just sit out there and talk together. We like to talk about a wide range of things such as film and movies, the future development of film, the economy, and even about the universe.

I also brought along the Disciple members (now called the “New Seven Little Fortunes”) to play some characters in the film. Although you may not recognize them or the characters they play in the film because their parts aren’t very big and their roles aren’t very important, they can still absorb a lot of experience from making a movie and working on the set. I also know that they trying very hard with acting and learning, everyone is involved. When they don’t need to work on the set, they practice martial arts or even practice dancing. As their sifu (master), I am very impressed to see how they’re working so hard and trying to do well.

Making a movie is totally different from doing any other kind of work. Most of the time with other jobs, you have to work in a set environment and you have work with a fixed group of people all the time. But with film making, the environment changes according to whatever requirements are needed for the script and the people you cooperate with are also different. While filming this movie I met up with some old friends and I also became acquainted some new friends.

Previously in my diaries, I remember mentioning Leehom Wang. Even though we’ve known each other for quite a while, this is actually the first time we’ve worked together in a movie. Usually I’d teach him how to practice kung fu and he would teach me how to sing.

It’s already been two weeks since we first started filming and I think this production crew is the cleanest I’ve had. Maybe it’s because before the camera started rolling, I asked everybody to be clean and environmentally friendly. I’m also a man of my word. I made a promise that I’d ensure everybody has more food to eat and that everyone gets enough time to rest and I didn’t forget. I remember one time, we didn’t finish work until three in the morning and the producer said that we had to start work again at 7:00. I said no and changed the time to 9:00am. They said to me that crew members from China can handle the workload and they’re not afraid of hard work. But I think it’s not right to do that. We need to respect every single crew member in the production team. They’re just made of flesh and blood, and we need to respect them as human beings. Just because they can manage the workload doesn’t mean that we should let them carry the heavy load.

Fortunately, the weather has started to warm up these days and the mornings and evenings are not as cold as they used to be. But mid and late afternoon are still extremely hot. That doesn’t matter. When you’re in the film industry, you get to experience many things that a lot of other people don’t get to experience and you go to places where a lot people may never consider going to. This is what makes film-making so fascinating.
